What I have
learned so far this year
So far this year I have learned that there 10 different sectors of media, which are: Film/Radio/Magazine (Publication)/Marketing & Advertising/Video Games/TV/Animation/Interactive/Photo Imaging/Press. In media production, the 3 key stages are pre-production, production, and post production. I also learned that characteristics are features that are easily recognised by an audience.
I also learned that the word genre is French for type.
Within films & genres, there are also sub genres (a smaller, unofficial
genre) and cross-over genres/hybrid genres (where elements from two or more
genres feature in a media text). One example of a sub-genre is action-comedy
and one example of a cross genre is a horror/comedy. However genres are always
subject to change, as audiences have expectations of specific genres, but are
willing to accept innovation. Responses from media texts will show whether the
text has been accepted or rejected.
You can also have parodies within media. A parody is an imitation
of something, so more particularly in media you can get parodies of genres, for
example, one film parody is ‘Shaun of the Dead’. The film is a parody because
although the film features elements of a horror film, it is actually a comedy.
In lessons I have also learned about synergy and intertextuality.
Synergy is when two things come together to create a better/stronger effect in
a piece of media text. An example of synergy is bio shock, where two genres came
together.
Intertextuality is something that features in a piece of media
text which helps the audience relate therefore drawing the audience in. For
example in avengers infinity war you can see posters of other marvel films, and
in all marvel films, the ex-editor/author of marvel comics Stan Lee features in
all marvel films.
I have also learned about iconography. Iconography is something
that will only feature in a certain genre of film, for example the iconographies
of a horror film would be weapons, blood/gore and high-pitched music.
