The film is based on a soldier called Desmond Doss. He was a conscientious objector and was the first conscientious objector to be awarded the medal of honour. As portrayed in he film, he was treated very roughly, but when he was allowed to go to battle, he rescued approximately 75 wounded soldiers from the battlefield on his own, while being wounded 4 times himself while he was stationed at Okinawa.
-Narrative: Hacksaw Ridge is about a man called Desmond T. Doss who is a seventh day activist. He enlisted as a medic for the American army after the tragedy at pearl harbour after saving a workman in his home town, and receiving great satisfaction from it. Before he enlisted, he met a nurse named Dorothy. Due to his personal religious beliefs, Doss went to the battlefield without carrying a single weapon. Doss spent just under a month posted at Okinawa, Japan. When his battalion members find out about his beliefs, they treat Doss very poorly and continue to do so until they see his medical talent on the battlefield. Only the do they start to accept him and his beliefs. During the battle for Hacksaw Ridge, when the rest of the platoon where evacuated, Doss stayed behind and continued to care for the wounded, and taking them to the evacuation point. It was because of this that Doss was awarded the congressional medal of honour, making him the first conscientious objector to have this honour.
